West Midlands Police Records Raid 13 16th September 1940
Air Raid Warning Red was given at 8.19 p.m. on Monday 16th September and a ‘Raider passed’ was sounded at 9.16 p.m. During this period no incident was reported. A further Air Raid Warning Red was given at 10.39 p.m. the ‘Raiders passed’ being received at 11.36 p.m. During this latter period 15 High Explosive bombs were dropped, all of which exploded. The first report of a bomb being dropped was at 11.5 p.m. The result of this raid was that damage was reported to approximately 135 houses as follow: Dad’s Lane, Kings Heath vicinity 64. One demolished, 3 extensively damaged and the remainder slightly damaged (including 17 police houses). Cole Valley Road 26 slightly damaged. Westridge Road and vicinity 28 slightly damaged. Ampton and Arthur Road, Edgbaston 9 slightly damaged. On High Explosive bomb exploded 15 feet from an Anderson Shelter, the back portion of which was not properly covered, causing 1 fatal and 5 slightly injured casualties. This occurred at 88 Effingham Road, Billesley. Total casualties 1 fatal and 6 slightly injured. Believed plane involved crashed near Birmingham after fouling barrage balloon. |
