Erdington House Raid 53 - 11th/12th March 1941 - From Marjorie Ashby’s notes in ‘The Truth Must be Told’ by Alison Gove-Humphries The raid began at 9.10 p.m. Areas affected: Small Heath, Stechford, Yardley, West Bromwich, Handsworth, Sutton Coldfield, Aston, Kings Heath, Nechells, City Centre. Damage to houses by High Explosive bombs. Incendiary bombs started 5 fires. 15-20 houses demolished and others damaged. 140 aircraft attacked the city. Large number of incendiary bombs dropped on NE part of the City. High Explosive bombs caused considerable damage to factories and house property. There was a shortage of water. One major, 20 serious and 40 medium fires were still burning the following afternoon. Damage to mains widespread and electricity supply in NW…failed. 25 factories affected including Nechells Power Station and the Birmingham Corporation Gas Works. 5 Police stations, 7 churches, including the Cathedral and 4 Tram depots damaged.
