During this academic year Swanshurst has hosted a number of successful Parent Groups during the school day. So far parents have taken part in a Computer Literacy Course, a Healthy Eating Seminar and currently we are running an English as a Second Language Group. Alongside this we are also pleased to be running a Positive Parenting Course also known as ‘Triple P’.
The course was developed by a Professor Saunders of the University Of Queensland and is highly regarded by professionals working with young people. Triple P is aimed at any parent who wishes to learn more about the issues that may affect their daughter’s development during her teenage years. Teenagers certainly, “don’t come with an instruction manual,” so this course highlights a range of practical strategies that parents can adapt for their particular circumstances.
It is tailored to meet the needs of the individual parent in a relaxed, friendly environment where no one makes judgements as all parents are there to learn. It begins by focusing on the positive, acknowledging a teenager’s good behaviour and describing ways of rewarding this. It then moves on to considering various forms of challenging behaviour that could put a teenager at risk and in danger of adversely affecting her life chances.
Triple P is delivered by an experienced team from outside of Swanshurst School. The course programme is made up of five in school sessions, followed by three weeks of telephone support during which any concerns can be discussed and various strategies to resolve problems shared.
Here are some of the things parents have said about this course;
If you like the sound of this course and missed out this term, contact Gill Boothroyd at Swanshurst. She will give you details of forthcoming courses in our area and, if the demand warranted it, plan one to be held at school in the near future.
