You may wonder what connects the maths you do in school to the real world. Will you ever have to solve an equation or find an angle outside your classroom?

Maths is very useful and is everywhere in everyday life. You might not think of buying sweets as algebra, or consider the maths that went into designing your favourite computer game.

But remember, maths is everywhere and what you learn in school will be very important for your future.

Topics Covered

GCSE Mathematics is grouped into the topic areas of number, algebra, geometry, measures, statistics and probability.

Students knowledge will build on prior learning and new topics are introduced such as kinematic graphs, compound percentages, Pythagoras’ theorem, trigonometry, advanced probability, cumulative frequency and exponentials.

Assessment

Whilst studying Mathematics GCSE at Swanshurst School you will be assessed and given feedback by your teacher regularly, using both topic and termly assessments. The feedback on your achievement will support you to identify topics you need to improve on.

As the GCSE is linear it means that all the examinations are taken at the end of the course (at the end of Year 11) and any of the specified topics can be tested on any paper. There are two tiers of entry; Higher and Foundation. The Higher examination offers achievement at grades 4-9 whereas the Foundation paper offers grades 1 - 5.

Course Progression

The mathematical skills of problem solving, logical thinking, and investigation will help your progress in whatever you choose to study. In addition to these general skills, Mathematics is required for further education and working in a wide range of areas - anything from plumbing to economics.

If you wish to study A Level Mathematics, it is essential that you achieve at a high level at GCSE. A good grade at GCSE Mathematics will help you to progress to a range of highly successful A Levels at Swanshurst Sixth Form.
